Exploring the Avian Wonders - Part 1: A Birding Adventure at Manas National Park (Assam)

Manas National Park is a national park, Project Tiger reserve, and an elephant reserve in Assam, India. Located in the Himalayan foothills, it borders the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan. The park is known for its rare and endangered endemic wildlife such as the Assam roofed turtle, hispid hare, golden langur and pygmy hog. Manas is also famous for its population of the wild water buffalo. Because of its exceptional biodiversity, scenery, and variety of habitats, Manas National Park is a biosphere reserve and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Manas hosts more than 450 species of birds. It has the largest population of the endangered Bengal florican to be found anywhere. The Silver-breasted Broadbill is a major attraction for Birders. Other major bird species include great hornbills, jungle fowls, bulbuls, brahminy ducks, kalij pheasants, egrets, pelicans, fishing eagles, crested serpent-eagles, falcons, scarlet minivets, bee-eaters, magpie robins, pied hornbills, grey hornbills, mergansers, harriers, Indian peafowl, ospreys and herons.
This photo album is a collection of images of Bird and Wildlife during our Birding trip to Manas National Park (1st Stop - Part 1) in 3rd week of December 2024. Our guide was the wonderful Umesh Das (Mobile number on request), with eagle eyes for spotting birds.
We were a group of 4 Birding enthusiasts travelling to Assam (Manas National Park) & West Bengal (Buxa & Latpanchar) in the search of adding quite a few new species to our Check List (called "Lifers" in birding terms). And we were not disappointed. I added more than 60 lifers to my Checklist.
